Zambia’s Copper Boom Drives Potential $1 Billion IPO Wave

Zambia Eyes Up to $1 Billion in IPOs as Copper Prices Strengthen Investor Interest

Zambia’s capital markets could see a significant increase in initial public offerings (IPOs), with companies potentially raising up to $1 billion on the Lusaka Securities Exchange (LuSE) as strong copper prices boost investor interest.

The LuSE expects the potential IPO pipeline to mark an unprecedented level of activity for the exchange.

The outlook comes as Zambia’s copper sector expands and mining companies seek additional capital to finance production growth and new projects.

Copper strengthens investment outlook

Zambia, Africa’s second-largest copper producer, is targeting a substantial increase in annual copper output over the coming years.

The country produced about 890,000 tonnes in 2025 and aims to reach approximately 3 million tonnes annually by 2031.

Higher copper prices have improved the investment case for producers and exploration companies, while growing global demand from electrification, renewable energy, electric vehicles and data-centre infrastructure is strengthening long-term market prospects.

The improved outlook is also encouraging companies to consider public markets as a source of funding for expansion.

LuSE prepares for increased activity

The potential $1 billion in IPOs would represent a major increase in activity for the Lusaka exchange and could broaden investment opportunities for institutional and retail investors.

New listings would also give companies access to domestic capital while potentially increasing the depth and liquidity of Zambia’s financial markets.

Mining is expected to remain a major source of IPO activity, given the capital-intensive nature of copper expansion and the substantial funding required to develop new resources.

Copper projects seek capital

Several major copper developments in Zambia are already attracting significant investment.

Projects such as Mingomba, alongside expansion programmes at established operations, are expected to contribute to the country’s production ambitions. Companies are increasingly looking at different funding structures, including equity markets, strategic investments and project financing.

The potential IPO pipeline therefore comes at a time when Zambia’s copper industry is seeking to expand production while global manufacturers compete for secure supplies of the metal.

If the expected listings materialise, the additional capital could support mining expansion while strengthening Zambia’s domestic capital market and increasing local participation in the country’s growing copper industry.
